Not below the belt at all... I thought that exact same thing. I'm more exploring my ideas to see where they fall apart than trying to prove anything. I learned that from my husband... that sometimes you explore something you don't necessarily believe in to see if it works.
You're take is probably closer to right, though I find your explanation for why he gets the photograph of Janey dissatisfying ;-)
And yeah, I like masticating on good lit too. It's been awhile since I've found something that sparks my imagination this way, though. Never expected it.
