Kids are Funny
Jul. 10th, 2005 01:54 pmI have a kid in the nursery that does NOT listen.
He's not 3 yet and will delibrately and wilfully ignore you when you tell him to stop doing something he wants to do. You have to physically stop him, put your hands on his shoulders, say "look at me" 80 million times to get him to make eye contact, and THEN tell him what you need him to know before it will actually penetrate his little brain.
So, it usually goes something like this.
"Hey... look at me. Listen to me. No, put that down and listen to me. Are you listening to me? Look here. Look at me... No, at me... listen to me. Are you listening to me? (All this time he is quirming, and looking at the pair of scissors he was about to throw at his sister or whatever.)..." Until I am able to get him to stop.
Afterwards you have to get a check, like. "Ok so you're not going to hit your sister, right?" or "You're not going to stand on the chair, right?" or "You're not going to bang the toy cars together and break them, right?" or whatever.
Then I always end with "Ok, that's good. Now give me a hug, it's okay. Now, let's go back and play!" and be all up beat with them so they still feel liked and everything, which is important.
So, I'm sitting in the nursery today and I notice that his litle sister, who's barely 2 has a teddy bear and she's talking to it, pretty normal for a kid that age. But she's saying:
"Are you listening to me? Are you listening to me? Are you listeing to me?"
I was a little confused.
Then she says: "Ok, now give me a hug." and hugs the bear.
I thought that was so funny.
Man, to be mimicked by a child is just mindblowing somehow. LOL
