Ah, debate. I think that's the difference. I never did debate, just a heck of a lot of literary analysis (grad school, medieval lit). Hence probably the feel that I was "picking and choosing" lines to support my points.

I certainly appreciate your perspective and plan to read with an eye to whether I was just seeing something that wasn't there (though the question is then why did I see that, which may be just as interesting to explore). I'll admit to hoping something in what I saw is there, if only because I really liked the Jon I was reading... much more than the Jon in the film.
